Financial update
The Board presented the year-end financial statement showing the club's overall net assets and operating surplus. Registration fees were the club's main source of revenue, while ice rentals and coaching represented its primary expenses. Members accepted the financial statements as presented.
Governance decisions
Members considered and approved several measures related to CPSC's governance and operations:

CPSC AND CANSKATE EXCELLENCE

CPSC Holds CanSkate Excellence “Exceeded Standard” Recognition
A first skating lesson stays with a child. CanSkate is where that happens — where skaters build confidence, learn the basics, and find a community on the ice. At Centennial Park Skating Club, we take that starting point seriously, which is part of why CanSkate Excellence, Skate Ontario’s recognition program for CanSkate delivery, matters to us.
CanSkate Excellence recognizes clubs that deliver Skate Canada’s CanSkate program at or above the national standard. CPSC currently holds the Exceeded Standard level, the program’s highest tier. For us, maintaining this recognition is really a chance to check our own work — our coaches, program assistants, volunteers, and Board all have a hand in it.
What is CanSkate Excellence?
CanSkate is Skate Canada’s learn-to-skate program, used by clubs across the country. Skate Ontario runs the Excellence Recognition Program on top of it, recognizing clubs that go beyond the basic requirements — in session planning, coach training, skill progression, safety, and how the program actually runs on the ice.
That lines up with what CPSC already tries to do: give skaters in Etobicoke a solid, well-run place to start, whether they stick with CanSkate or move on to STARSkate and beyond.
Why this matters
Recognition isn’t a one-time badge. Skate Ontario’s program includes ongoing requirements — coaches complete refresher training, and clubs are periodically visited and evaluated by a CanSkate Specialist. Holding Exceeded Standard isn’t something that, once earned, stays automatically — it has to be actively maintained, season after season.
The work behind it
Most of what goes into this happens off the ice, before skaters arrive:
- Fully planned sessions designed to maximize ice time and keep skaters moving.
- Station-based training set for multiple skill levels so every skater stays active and appropriately challenged.
- Coaches committed to continuous skill development and certifications beyond their foundational credentials.
- Clear safety rules and communication with families.
- An outside evaluator, a CanSkate Specialist, reviewing sessions and giving real feedback.
- Coaches, program assistants, volunteers, and the Board all working together in support of our skaters.
What it means for CPSC families
Practically, it means your child’s CanSkate session is structured and intentional. There’s a plan behind it, coaches stay current on training, and the program gets outside review and feedback.
It also means we maintain a core standard while continuing to improve. Maintaining Exceeded Standard takes continued effort every season.
Where CPSC stands province-wide
Skate Ontario’s current CanSkate Excellence list recognizes 178 clubs and skating schools across three tiers: Exceeded Standard, Achieved Standard, and Engaged Standard. Of those, 96 organizations, including CPSC, currently hold Exceeded Standard, the program’s highest tier.
Recognition levels are reviewed regularly and can change, so this reflects the current published list rather than a permanent standing. Skate Ontario administers this program on a province-wide basis and does not publish a regional or city-level breakdown, so we’re presenting our standing at the provincial level rather than making a regional comparison we can’t verify directly from the source.
From our Co-President
“Achieving CanSkate Excellence Exceeded Standard is a proud milestone for our club. This award validates what our families experience every lesson: exceptional coaching, intentional lesson planning, and a club culture built on continuous improvement.”
What’s next
Weekly CanSkate lessons maintain consistency because of this commitment. What matters is that the standard behind it holds up, season after season. Thanks to everyone who puts in the work: coaches, program assistants, volunteers, and the Board.
